This is a photograph of my brother preparing for his Bartabandha, a traditional Nepali ritual signifying one's transition into manhood. Here he can be seen putting on makeup after having his head shaved. After getting dressed and going through hours of prayer, the boy begins his symbolic journey. Where he must try to outrun an older man in the family. Once caught, a thread is tied around his wrist and the boy is considered a man.
